Can You Pressure Wash an RV?

Have you ever looked at your RV, covered in road grime and bug splatter, and thought there must be an easy way to clean it? You’ve spent a lot of time and money on your RV, and now it’s time to make sure it looks good for the next trip. Most RVers turn to pressure washing to quickly transform their dusty, dirty vehicles into sparkling homes on wheels. But some hesitate, worried that it might cause damage.

While pressure washing can be an effective solution, it’s important to understand the method to avoid accidentally harming your RV’s exterior. We’ve gathered some tips and precautions to help you decide if pressure washing is suitable for your RV’s needs.

Preparing Your RV for Pressure Washing

Before you begin spraying, properly prepare your RV. This preparation will protect your vehicle and ensure optimal cleaning results.

  • Inspect the RV. Check your RV for any existing damage, such as cracks in the exterior, peeling paint, or loose seals. Note any areas that may need special attention or extra care during washing. This precaution will help prevent accidentally worsening any existing issues while cleaning.

  • Secure and protect sensitive areas. Cover vents, electrical outlets, and seams with waterproof tape or plastic sheeting to prevent water from entering unwanted areas. For external accessories like antennas or solar panels, either remove them or ensure they’re adequately covered to avoid damage during cleaning.

  • Choose a suitable location. Park your RV on a flat, stable surface. This is important for your safety and to ensure proper drainage. Avoid allowing water to pool around your RV, as it can seep into seams, vents, or other vulnerable spots. A slight incline can help with drainage, but make sure your RV is stable and secure.

Selecting the Right Pressure Washing Equipment

With your RV adequately prepped, it’s time to select the appropriate tools. A pressure washer with around 1,500 PSI and a 25 or 40-degree nozzle will help you achieve a thorough cleaning without risking damage to your vehicle.

  • Pressure washer specifications. For most RVs, a pressure washer with a PSI of around 1,500 is ideal. This range offers enough power to clean effectively without damaging your RV’s exterior. When it comes to water flow, aim for a machine that delivers between 1.4 and 2.5 GPM. This will provide enough water to rinse away dirt and soap efficiently.

  • Nozzles and attachments. Wider nozzles are generally better for RV cleaning. A 25-degree or 40-degree nozzle will give you a good balance of cleaning power and surface coverage.

Consider using a foam cannon attachment if you want a faster and more thorough clean. This handy tool helps apply soap evenly across your RV’s surface, making cleaning more efficient.

  • Cleaning agents. Choose your cleaning products wisely. Look for RV-specific cleaners or mild detergents that are safe for use on your RV’s exterior materials. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the finish or fade your RV’s decals. Remember, gentler is usually better when it comes to RV care.

Pressure Washing Techniques

With your RV prepped and the right equipment, you’re ready to start washing. Applying the proper techniques will ensure a deep clean while protecting your vehicle from damage.

  • Safe pressure washing practices. Maintain at least 12 to 18 inches between the nozzle and your RV’s surface. Start with a lower pressure setting and adjust as needed. It's always better to start gently and increase pressure if necessary rather than risk damage from too much power immediately.

  • Washing methodology. Start at the top of your RV and work your way down. This prevents dirty water from running over areas you’ve already cleaned. Wash in sections, focusing on one area at a time to ensure thorough cleaning. Use horizontal or vertical sweeping motions to cover the surface evenly.

  • Cleaning specific areas. Some areas of your RV require special attention during washing. Be extra careful and use a lower-pressure spray, paying special attention to seams and vents.

Switch to a wider spray pattern and lower pressure when cleaning around windows and seals. These areas are particularly vulnerable to water intrusion, so take your time and be gentle.

Keep the nozzle at a greater distance when cleaning areas with decals or graphics. The high pressure can peel or fade these decorative elements if you're not careful.

  • Rinsing and drying. Once you’ve scrubbed every inch of your RV, it’s time to rinse. Use clean water to rinse away all soap residue thoroughly. After rinsing, use a microfiber towel or chamois and dry the surface. This extra step helps prevent water spots and gives your RV that extra shine.

Post-Wash Inspection and Maintenance

After washing your RV, perform a final inspection and complete maintenance tasks.

  • Inspect for damage. Take another walk around your RV, checking all seams, seals, and windows for signs of water intrusion or damage. If you notice any compromised areas, now’s the time to re-seal them. It is better to catch and fix these issues than to discover a leak on your next camping trip!

  • Clean the pressure washer. Rinse out the pressure washer, nozzles, and hoses to prevent clogging and damage. Proper maintenance of your tools will ensure they’re ready for your next cleaning session.

  • Regular maintenance tips. To keep your RV looking its best, consider applying a protective wax or sealant after washing. This extra layer helps protect the finish from UV rays and makes future cleanings easier.

Also, try to establish a regular cleaning schedule. Regular maintenance prevents stubborn dirt and grime buildup, making each cleaning session quicker and easier.
